The Flower

I was that little girl who would water dead flowers to try to bring them back to life

Who grew into a woman who would love and give too much.

Even now, I am sad when fresh flowers, vibrant and beautiful, die.

I think that was how you left me in the end. Unwatered and clinging to life.

Folded

“Am I still your favourite person?”

I asked, eyes wide,

Arms wrapped behind my back like folded

Linen laundry,

Egyptian cotton.

Can you unfold me and

tug at the frayed  edges until we forget they existed,

Kiss me clean.

“Am I still your favourite person?” I ask,

Or just forgotten

dirty

laundry.

He Wore Forgiveness Well

A soul mate is the one who can drag you giggling with forgiveness from the cellar they locked you in.

He wore forgiveness well.

with his half smile and buttoned up shirt

the slight hesitation before he kissed my cheek

the half-hearted apology

Ex’s come back to haunt

Dead bodies rise up to the surface in the end

Even when you spend your life burying them

The ghosts in the closet were part of you

You broke my pretty red heart in two.

But

He wore forgiveness well.

with his half smile and buttoned up shirt

the slight hesitation before he kissed my cheek

the half-hearted apology.

Broken Wings

‘You’re like a broken bird’, he said.

‘I want to fix you up and set you free.’

I said, ‘what if I’m not worth saving?’

He replied, ‘but you are.’

He paused. ‘It’s ok to be a little broken you know.’

I can still feel your arms even now

Maybe I wouldn’t be so messed up in the head

If we’d never met,

Knowing that night I should have left,

But I clung to your bed

With my head on your chest.

I can still feel your arms,

Even now.

The Devil’s Daughter

Rebel heart of black and red

With one look she’d kiss you dead

Love you, fuck you, then she’s fled

Into the night

With no tears shed.

The girl in her reckless red

dress and her Satan

smile

The devil’s child.

A Tale Untold

She has a restless soul

A heart of gold

A messy mind

A tale untold,

He took her heart

But not her mind,

Though he’s unkind

She still does shine.
