Midnight Blue

You were with me when I had my mid-twenties crisis

And cut off all of my hair

Even you could not save me from myself

I know you would try

Madness runs in my family, I’d say, laughing

A cherry stem between my teeth

Chunks of midnight hair in my hands.

The Flower

I was that little girl who would water dead flowers to try to bring them back to life

Who grew into a woman who would love and give too much.

Even now, I am sad when fresh flowers, vibrant and beautiful, die.

I think that was how you left me in the end. Unwatered and clinging to life.

Favourite Things

We were each other’s favourite thing

It was more than a lover’s fling

You held me close and stroked my hair

We were such a perfect pair

Although no labels

We were true

There could never be another you

I loved I loved

You tried and tried

The day came for us to say goodbye

You wiped my tears away and sighed

I’ll see you soon

Just please don’t cry

I dare not say it

I just closed my eyes

I’ll love you till’ the day I die

The Goddess and the Sailor Boy

The secrets of us were tucked between my ribs

With writings of love and loss and

inklings of passion, betrayal

The story of a goddess and a sailor boy

her palm pressed against the milky moon

How she tried to keep him close with incantations

But always knew he belonged to the waves of the sea

and there was no keeping him from it

The goddess was seasick but the sailor was free.

Yellow Hope

That little room with bright yellow walls

How we laughed our way through the winter and summer

I hope yellow paint will always remind you

of my sunshine smile

My outdoor inside voice

My head on your chest

I hope you look back and think of that year together as magic

a time where you felt true happiness

I hope you meet another girl with a wild soul too

I hope you will be kind when she finds you.

-Yellow is the brightest color of the visible spectrum, and it is the most noticeable of all colors by the human eye. It means happiness and optimism; it is the color of sun shining, or bright light and creativity. … It is the color of high energy, enthusiasm, hope, fun, and cheerfulness.

Rollercoaster Love

My life with you was a rollercoaster ride

I did not want to get off

I was used to the rise and fall in my tummy

Used to the chaos you brought

Used to the mess you left

There were nights when I was tucked into him

peaceful, quiet, safe,

Where I longed for your fast paced kiss.

My Mediterranean Sea

You were my Mediterranean dream,                                                                                             My Mediterranean sea
of sparkling water
bouncing off of a Turquoise tablecloth,
laced in sunlight
scattered                                                                                                                                                 with little stars
with layers of coastlines for days,
just out of reach.
Your waters frothing                                                                                                                           a forbidden beach
I, at a top of a cliff,
Ready to fall                                                                                                                                            fall                                                                                                                                                              fall                                                                                                                                                              into you

And
let the wind carry me.

Forehead Kisses

Forehead kisses

I would burrow my head in your chest

and hibernate through all seasons

You loved me with strong warm arms

and When I was sad you would

hold my chin between finger and thumb

You would stroke my hair

forehead kisses

How you would tell me to stop being silly,

forehead kisses

How I felt sick to the stomach

at

how you felt more like a father than a lover to me,

in the end.

I was home with you but I wanted to run away,

I know little girls grow into women,

But you kept saying,

Stay, stay, stay.

Diamond Water

If I had a daughter

I would tell her

each tear that falls is diamond water.

Do not waste them on unworthy men

My mother says, do not trust

the blue-eyed boys

who smile,

Look carefully, she says

For the growl

escaping

from in between his teeth.

He will gnaw you to white bone,

The sinew

he will cut through you like rope,

the hint of the devil curled into the corner of his mouth

Prohibition-

liquor, against her

he could not see the fire

In her ribcage of flames

so burn him to the ground

Before he has a chance to put it out.

You flew free.

The caged little bird grew up to be a wild raven,

A Wanderess,

Walking over the ashes of lost men.

So, again, my dear child.

Each tear that falls is diamond water,

Do not waste them on unworthy men.

Distance

Distance came to me a year later,

Tall and handsome,

he had not changed.

But, You haven’t known Distance.

Not until he says hello,

and you can’t recognise his voice anymore

Until he hugs you

and his arms

feel foreign,

Until you breathe him in

but his scent has been

forgotten.

I was certain I only knew Distance

once you were no longer familiar

to me.

But two years later,

Distance came again,

and

I welcomed him back

like an old friend.
